Chandigarh, April 20 In a high-octane clash at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) outplayed Punjab Kings by seven wickets in Match 37 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. A dominant batting display led by Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal powered RCB past the 158-run target with seven balls to spare.

Kohli, Padikkal Anchor Clinical Chase
Chasing a moderate target of 158, RCB’s innings started on a shaky note with Phil Salt dismissed for just 1 run. However, the veteran Virat Kohli and young gun Devdutt Padikkal steadied the ship with a magnificent 103-run partnership. The duo kept the scoreboard ticking with precision strokeplay and occasional aggression.
Padikkal brought up his 10th IPL half-century off just 30 balls, eventually scoring a 35-ball 61, laced with five fours and four sixes. Kohli, the backbone of RCB’s chase, anchored the innings with an unbeaten 73 off 54 balls — his 59th IPL fifty — featuring seven boundaries and one maximum. Rajat Patidar contributed 12 runs before being dismissed, while Jitesh Sharma remained not out on 11, assisting Kohli in sealing the win in the 19th over.
Punjab’s Promising Start Falters Midway
Opting to bat first after losing the toss, Punjab Kings opened strongly with youngsters Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh adding 41 runs in the first four overs. However, their innings lost momentum after the fall of quick wickets. Arya was dismissed for 22, followed by Prabhsimran’s 33 off 17 balls, including five fours and a six.
Captain Shreyas Iyer (6), Nehal Wadhera (5), and Marcus Stoinis (1) failed to capitalize, leaving the middle order exposed. Josh Inglis chipped in with a quick 29 off 17, but Punjab struggled to maintain rhythm. Late resistance came from Marco Jansen (25*) and Shashank Singh (31*), pushing the team to 157/6 in 20 overs.
RCB’s Bowlers Deliver Under Pressure
Royal Challengers Bangalore’s bowlers set the tone early. Krunal Pandya and Suyash Sharma picked two wickets each, applying brakes during crucial phases. Romario Shepherd added one to his tally with disciplined death-over bowling, limiting Punjab to a chaseable total.
With this win, RCB climbed to third on the points table with 10 points from eight matches (5 wins, 3 losses). Punjab, also on 10 points with the same win-loss record, slipped to fourth due to a lower net run rate.
