April 24, 2025 — Shanghai, China — In a groundbreaking announcement set to redefine electric mobility, CATL (Contemporary Amperex TECHNOLOGY Co. Limited) has unveiled its next-generation Shenxing EV battery, capable of delivering 520km of range in just five minutes of charging and boasting a total driving range of up to 1500km on a single charge.
Revealed at CATL’s annual Tech Day event in Shanghai, the battery marks a major leap in fast-charging electric vehicle (EV) technology, putting “range anxiety” firmly in the rearview mirror.
2.6 km Per Second: Charging at Revolutionary Speed
The new Shenxing battery technology charges at an incredible pace — 2.6 kilometers of range per second, twice the speed of BYD’s 1-megawatt system, which adds 400km in 10 minutes. With the ability to rival — or even outpace petrol fueling times — this innovation signals a potential turning point in global EV adoption.
Such rapid recharge capabilities promise transformative effects on long-distance travel, fleet management, and urban mobility infrastructure.
Cold Weather Resilience Redefines Global Viability
Among its standout features is the Shenxing battery’s superior cold-weather performance. Unlike many current EV batteries that struggle in sub-zero temperatures, CATL’s battery charges from 5% to 80% in just 15 minutes at -10°C, offering unprecedented reliability in harsh climates — a major boon for consumers in northern markets.
Dual-Battery System and Naxtra Sodium-Ion Tech in the Pipeline
CATL also shared its roadmap for a dual-battery system expected by 2027–2028, combining two battery chemistries to deliver up to 1500km of range. Though the secondary unit charges slower, it significantly enhances range and cost efficiency. The auxiliary battery’s non-graphite structure also lowers reliance on expensive materials, signaling a move toward cost-effective EV solutions.
Additionally, CATL announced it will begin mass production of sodium-ion batteries under the brand Naxtra for FAW trucks starting December 2025. These batteries offer 90% capacity retention, superior thermal stability, and reduced pricing — making them a competitive alternative for combustion, hybrid, and industrial applications.
