Chandigarh, May 4 A fresh Western Disturbance (WD) is influencing the weather across Punjab, bringing relief from the rising temperatures and triggering unstable atmospheric conditions. The INDIA Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and yellow alerts for 16 districts, forecasting thunderstorms, rainfall, and gusty winds with speeds ranging between 40–60 km/h.

Despite a 2.1°C increase in average maximum temperature in recent days, the current readings are still 3.1°C below normal, offering some relief to residents.

• May 5 Alerts:

  • Yellow Alert: Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Nawanshahr, Fatehgarh Sahib, Patiala, Sangrur, Barnala, Bathinda, Mansa

• May 6–7 Alerts:

  • Yellow Alert: Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar, Mohali (SAS Nagar), Fatehgarh Sahib, Patiala

The alert extends through the next six days, indicating continued storm risk and moderate rainfall across central and northern Punjab.

City-Specific Forecasts Show Widespread Cloud Cover and Rain Potential

The IMD expects partly to mostly cloudy skies with intermittent showers and lightning in several key cities:

• Amritsar: Cloudy, light rain possible; 20°C to 36°C

• Jalandhar: Cloudy with rain chances; 20°C to 36°C

• Ludhiana: Overcast skies with lightning; 19.9°C to 34.7°C

• Patiala: Cloudy with showers expected; 21°C to 35°C

• Mohali: Lightning and light rain possible; 22°C to 35.1°C

In Bathinda, the highest recorded temperature on Saturday was 39.3°C, though most other districts remained in the 33–36°C range, consistent with cooler-than-normal seasonal averages.

• Avoid open areas during lightning activity
