Shimla, June 29 – Continuous heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh has brought normal life to a standstill, with landslides, blocked highways, and rising river levels reported across the state. The INDIA Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall for the next two days, along with a widespread rain warning until July 5.

NH-05 Blocked Again Near Chakki Mor
A massive landslide occurred near Chakki Mor on Chandigarh-Shimla National Highway (NH-05) in Solan district on Sunday, disrupting traffic for nearly 90 minutes. Boulders and debris from the hillside obstructed the road, leaving vehicles stranded. Authorities managed to partially restore traffic by clearing one lane, now being regulated by police teams. The situation has drawn comparisons to last year’s monsoon, when Chakki Mor was entirely cut off due to similar landslides.
Adding to the challenges, the Jangeshu Road, marked as an alternative route, has also been affected by landslides. Efforts are underway to restore this road to allow diversion of traffic from Kasauli to Chandigarh.
Kalka-Shimla Toy Train Service Hit
The Kalka-Shimla heritage railway has also suffered as trees and rocks blocked the tracks in Solan. Cleanup operations are in progress, but the disruption has caused significant inconvenience to tourists and daily commuters.
Landslides Hit Shimla, Roads Blocked
In the state capital Shimla, heavy rainfall triggered multiple landslides. In Khallini’s Mist Chamber area, two houses are reportedly at risk due to slope failure linked to nearby construction work. On the Panthaghati-Junga road, a large tree collapsed, blocking access. Meanwhile, debris blocked the road leading to Chamyana Super Specialty Hospital, forcing patients to walk through slippery paths.
District authorities have activated round-the-clock emergency response units, and Deputy Commissioner of Solan, Manmohan Sharma, urged residents to avoid non-essential travel and steer clear of riverbanks. Alerts have been issued to low-lying settlements in the BBN industrial belt, advising them to move to safer zones.
Mandi Records Highest Rainfall, Beas River Alert
Among the districts, Jogindernagar in Mandi recorded the heaviest rainfall at 135 mm in the past 24 hours. Other notable rainfall figures include Kasauli (125 mm), Kahu (119 mm), Paonta Sahib (116 mm), Sundernagar (96 mm), Shimla (91 mm), Kufri (89 mm), and Bilaspur (86 mm).
The IMD has issued a flash flood alert for 10 districts, excluding Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur. Additionally, Pandoh Dam gates in Mandi may be opened to manage water levels, prompting a warning about sudden water rise in the Beas River. The public, particularly those living near the riverbanks, has been urged to remain cautious and relocate to safer areas if necessary.
Himachal Pradesh is now on high alert as the monsoon intensifies, with authorities working on war footing to respond to emergencies and minimize damage.
