The Magic of Holi at the Box Office: From Kesari to Badrinath Ki Dulhania

Mumbai, March 3: The festival of colors, Holi, has brought excitement not only to the general public but also to many stars in the film industry. This year, however, audiences were left disappointed as no films were released during the Holi festivities. This is not always the case, as several films have previously hit theaters around this time, with some achieving great success while others fell flat.

From the patriotic film ‘Kesari’ to the romantic drama ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’, these movies have showcased the magic of Holi in various ways at the box office.

‘Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar’ is a romantic-comedy released in 2023, directed by Luv Ranjan. Starring Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor, the film received positive feedback from both audiences and critics. Its release on Holi gave it a significant boost, leading to its success.

‘Bachchhan Paandey’ is an action-comedy featuring Akshay Kumar, Kriti Sanon, and Jacqueline Fernandez in lead roles. Despite extensive promotions in 2022, the film failed to impress at the box office and was deemed a flop. Viewers did not resonate with it, although Arshad Warsi played a significant role.

‘Saina’, a sports biopic starring Parineeti Chopra, was released during Holi in 2021 but made little impact at the box office, resulting in a disappointing performance in India.

‘Angrezi Medium’, one of Irrfan Khan’s notable films, featured Kareena Kapoor and Radhika Madan. Released in 2020, it was not a sequel to ‘Hindi Medium’ but had a different storyline. Unfortunately, the film’s earnings were affected by the lockdown that followed shortly after its release, although Irrfan’s performance was widely praised.

‘Kesari’, a patriotic action film featuring Akshay Kumar, was based on the Battle of Saragarhi. Released during Holi in 2019, it became a blockbuster hit.

The horror-drama ‘Pari’, starring Anushka Sharma, was released during Holi in 2018 and received mixed reactions from audiences, resulting in average performance.

The romantic comedy ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’, released in 2017, starred Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt. Thanks to the Holi holidays, the film became a superhit.

Ajay Devgn and Tamannaah Bhatia’s ‘Himmatwala’ was also released during Holi in 2013 but failed to make a mark at the box office.

The suspense-thriller ‘Kahaani’, featuring Vidya Balan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, was released during Holi in 2012 and was well-received, becoming a hit.

In 2008, the thriller ‘Race’ was released, featuring Saif Ali Khan, Bipasha Basu, Akshaye Khanna, and Katrina Kaif. Directed by Abbas-Mustan, this film also found success at the box office during Holi.
