New Delhi, March 4: Kamalpreet Kaur emerged as a standout athlete during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, particularly in the discus throw event. Her remarkable performance secured her a spot in the finals, where she achieved a throw of 64 meters, making her the first Indian woman to reach the finals in this discipline. However, her journey was fraught with challenges.
From a young age, Kamalpreet had a deep passion for SPORTS, actively participating in school competitions. Her consistent performances showcased her talent. Despite her dedication, her family’s financial situation was challenging, and her mother was initially reluctant to support her athletic pursuits. Fortunately, her father, Kuldeep Singh, a farmer, provided unwavering support. Initially, Kamalpreet aimed to excel in shot put but later decided to focus on discus throw after joining a sports training center.
Kamalpreet began competing at the district level, where her skills continued to improve. In 2013, she participated in the Under-18 National Championship, finishing in second place. The following year, after joining the Sports Authority of India, she became the junior champion. By 2016, she had won her first national title, breaking the national record with a throw of 65.06 meters.
She has also represented India in the Commonwealth Games and Asian Championships. Kamalpreet’s achievements have demonstrated that Indian women athletes can compete at a global level in track and field events. Her hard work, confidence, and relentless practice have made her a formidable competitor on the international stage.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Kamalpreet faced a challenging period that led her toward depression. To cope, she began playing cricket in her village. Her impressive performance at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics helped her gain international recognition and set an example for girls across the country. She embodies the message that with clear goals and sincere effort, any achievement is possible.
