Mumbai, March 4: The landscape of men’s college basketball conferences is ever-changing. Each year brings new contenders and shifts in power. The “old Big East” was once a powerhouse until realignment in 2013 altered its structure. The Big 12 consistently performs well, while the SEC, once considered weak, emerged as a dominant force last season due to significant NIL funding. Although the Big Ten hasn’t claimed a national championship since Michigan State in 2000, it continues to produce memorable Final Four teams.
Evaluating conference strength often relies on NCAA tournament performance, but this approach can be misleading. Metrics from KenPom and BartTorvik provide a more comprehensive view of conference strength, which informed our rankings.
As March arrives, we present the top 15 conferences in men’s college basketball for the 2025-26 season, focusing on the best among the 31 conferences.
15. WAC
Regular season winner: Utah Valley
Challengers for the auto-bid: Cal Baptist
Utah Valley dominated this season, and head coach Todd Phillips may attract attention from larger programs. The Wolverines excel defensively, ranking No. 54 in DI by forcing turnovers and limiting opponents’ shooting. Cal Baptist also boasts a strong defense, but their offensive struggles hinder their potential. With only seven teams in the conference, and four departing, I predict Utah Valley will secure the auto-bid.

14. CAA
Regular season leader: UNC Wilmington
Challengers for the auto-bid: Hofstra, Charleston, Monmouth, Drexel
UNC Wilmington made last year’s NCAA tournament but has seen a drop in offensive performance this season. Hofstra’s notable wins against Pitt and Syracuse position them as strong contenders for the auto-bid, while Charleston could be a sleeper team.
13. Ivy League
Regular season leader: Yale
Challengers for the auto-bid: Harvard, Penn
Yale leads the conference with a solid record and a win over a strong MAC team. Nick Townsend, a senior forward, is a standout player, shooting 48% from three-point range.

12. Conference USA
Regular season winner: Liberty
Challengers for the auto-bid: Sam Houston State, Western Kentucky

11. Big West
Regular season leader: Hawaii
Challengers for the auto-bid: UC Irvine, UC San Diego, CSUN
Cal State Northridge plays at a fast pace but lacks consistency. UC Irvine’s strong defense could lead them to their first tournament appearance since 2019, while Hawaii’s offense raises questions.
