Udaipur to Get 20 New 33 kV GSS to Strengthen Power Supply

UDAIPUR, March 5, 2026 (Daily Udaipur): In a major step to strengthen the city’s electricity infrastructure, the process to establish 20 new 33 kV Grid Sub Stations (GSS) at an estimated cost of ₹100 crore has begun. The move aims to ensure stable and uninterrupted Power Supply in Udaipur, where daily consumption has reached nearly 50 lakh units.

According to officials of Ajmer Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (AVVNL), land has already been allotted by UDA for setting up 33 kV GSS at Meera Nagar and Sukher, as well as near Pacific Plastic Factory in Bedla. Superintendent Engineer K.R. Meena said the land allotment process is in its final stage for additional substations near Seesarma Pulia, Tiger Hills, Dhol Ki Pati, Bhoiyon Ki Pancholi and Lal Boat Chauraha in Bedla.

In the first phase, seven new 33 kV GSS are expected to be commissioned this year. The objective is to maintain uninterrupted electricity supply during storms and heavy rainfall. At present, faults at Madhuban and Seesarma GSS often disrupt supply across the city, including Hiranmagri and other major areas. In the second phase, eight more substations will be set up, followed by five in the third phase.

To ease operational pressure, a new AEN office will be opened in Bhuvana to reduce the workload of the Madhuban office. Currently, the Madhuban office handles more than 50,000 consumers. After the division, around 25,000 consumers will be assigned to each office to ensure quicker resolution of complaints. At present, resolving issues takes between 30 minutes to two hours. Similarly, a separate office will also be opened in Gogunda to reduce the burden on the Sayra AEN office.

Officials said that at present, if any GSS develops a fault, power supply remains disrupted for one to five hours, causing inconvenience to residents. The issue also affects the city’s image among domestic and international tourists. Udaipur city currently consumes around 50 lakh units of electricity daily, while the district’s total daily consumption stands at nearly one crore units. The new substations are expected to significantly reduce frequent power outages.

Power supply in the district currently depends largely on the 200 kV line from Rawatbhata to Debari, which also supplies electricity to Banswara and Dungarpur. This line remains overloaded. Additional supply comes through the 220 kV Kankroli-Ambari line and the Madri line, both of which also operate under heavy load. A fault in any of these lines often results in a blackout in nearly half of the city. As a permanent solution, a 440 kV GSS is being constructed at Ghasa.
