Mumbai, March 8: Nitish Kumar‘s son, Nishant Kumar, has officially joined the JD(U) in the presence of senior party leaders. Senior Congress leader Hussain Dalwai from Maharashtra stated that this move indicates a clear shift towards a BJP Chief Minister in Bihar.
In an interview, Dalwai expressed that Nishant Kumar’s influence will diminish significantly, likely relegating him to the role of Deputy Chief Minister. He noted that while there are currently two Deputy Chief Ministers, all major decisions are made by the Chief Minister. The distinction between the two roles is substantial; a Deputy Chief Minister operates more like a minister without the legal or constitutional powers held by the Chief Minister. Consequently, this could signal the end of Nitish Kumar‘s political reign.
Regarding allegations against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for disrespecting President Droupadi Murmu, Dalwai emphasized the importance of adhering to protocol for the presidential office. He acknowledged that failing to do so is a mistake, but the reasons behind the incident and Mamata Banerjee’s subsequent comments will clarify the situation further. Nonetheless, he insisted that proper protocol should have been observed.
On the no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Dalwai remarked that the Speaker must remain impartial. He criticized Birla for consistently aligning with BJP directives, which has led to the introduction of this resolution. He believes that if Nitish Kumar’s associates or those of Naidu maintain neutrality, the resolution is likely to pass.
Commenting on Rahul Gandhi’s remarks about ‘The Kerala Story 2’ and the film industry, Dalwai supported Gandhi’s stance. He argued that since the BJP came to power, some producers have been creating films that foster societal divisions, which is fundamentally wrong. He recalled that earlier films like ‘Mother India’ and ‘Bandini’ aimed to promote unity, contrasting them with current productions that he believes are detrimental to social cohesion.
Lastly, Dalwai raised concerns about the electoral rights of citizens, claiming there have been attempts to disenfranchise many voters. He believes this undermines the constitution and threatens democracy. Since the appointment of the new election commissioner, he feels the commission has been operating under government influence, which he deems unacceptable. The Election Commission should function independently, but it appears to have lost that autonomy.
