UDAIPUR, March 8 (Daily Udaipur) — On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the West Zone Cultural Centre (WZCC), Udaipur organised a powerful theatrical presentation under its monthly theatre evening ‘Rangshala’ on Sunday at Darpan Auditorium, Shilpgram. The play ‘Panchali’, staged by Himachal Cultural Research Forum and Theatre Repertory, received an overwhelming response from a packed audience.

WZCC Director Furkan Khan said the play was presented as part of the centre’s monthly theatre series Rangshala. The production was conceptualised and directed by theatre expert Prof. Suresh Sharma, former Director of NSD, New Delhi and NCZCC.
The play highlighted the story of Draupadi (Panchali) and portrayed the struggles, dignity, and rights of women. Through the character of Panchali, the presentation explored the pain, challenges, and introspection faced by women.
‘Panchali’ is not a conventional play but a long poem written by Nandkishore Acharya, which reflects the experiences of Panchali’s life and deeply expresses the suffering, struggle, and self-reflection of women. One of the key messages conveyed through the play was that despite the passage of time, the mindset of a male-dominated society has not changed significantly.
The narrative raised questions that Panchali asks herself during her final journey, which continue to remain relevant for women even in the present time. These questions reflect the concerns and realities faced by modern women today.
Under the skilled direction of Prof. Suresh Sharma, the performance emerged as a strong theatrical creation through expressive acting, gestures, symbols, and emotions. The portrayal of Panchali effectively conveyed the message of women’s empowerment.
The play featured performances by Sampa Mandal, Riddhima Bagga, Archana Rajput, and Ayushi in key roles. Kajal Ghosh handled the music, Sangeeta Sharma worked on choreography, Pintu Jha managed stage arrangements, and Harsh Raj served as presentation assistant.
Theatre lovers appreciated the initiative taken by the West Zone Cultural Centre and expressed gratitude for organising such events. At the end of the programme, all participating artists were honoured.
On the occasion, Deputy Director (Programme) Pawan Amarawat, Programme Executive Hemant Mehta, Dayaram Suthar, Siddhant Bhatnagar, along with several officials of the centre and distinguished guests from the city were present. The programme was conducted by Assistant Director (Finance and Accounts) Durgesh Chandwani.
The play, based on poetic narratives of Draupadi’s life, also conveyed a strong message against atrocities on women and emphasised empowerment. Through the character of Panchali, the play expressed the thought that a woman may be gentle but is not weak and is capable of protecting herself.
