Chennai, May 5: The recent assembly elections in Tamil Nadu have dealt a significant blow to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party. Out of the 164 seats contested directly, DMK managed to secure only 59 seats, resulting in a shift to the opposition.
The elections showcased a fierce triangular contest among DMK, Tamilga Vetrikuzhagam (TVK), and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). The strong performance of TVK contributed to the ruling party’s failure to maintain its dominance.

Senior leader Durai Murugan lost by over 7,600 votes in Katpadi, and Minister Muthusamy lost by more than 22,000 votes in Erode West.
In Alandur, T.M. Anbarasan lost by a margin of over 25,000 votes. One of the closest contests was in Tirupattur, where Minister Periyakaruppan lost by a single vote, reflecting the highly competitive nature of the elections.
Despite the widespread losses, some DMK leaders managed to retain their seats. Udhayanidhi Stalin won in Chepauk by over 7,300 votes, while Minister Shekharbabu secured victory in Harbour. K.N. Nehru held onto his seat in Tiruchirappalli West, and I. Periyasamy achieved a significant win in Athur.
