JNU Sexual Harassment Case: Women MPs Demand Justice for Students from President Murmu

New Delhi, October 14: A delegation of women MPs from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) met with President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday to discuss allegations of sexual harassment against Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, a dismissed professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Congress Lok Sabha MP. Dr. Alka Gurjar, a Rajya Sabha MP from Rajasthan, stated that she and 15 fellow women MPs presented the complaints made by students, the facts uncovered during the investigation, and issues related to their safety.

Gurjar emphasized that the delegation urged the President to ensure appropriate action in this matter so that the victimized students receive justice and a strong message regarding women’s dignity and safety is conveyed. “Our top priority is to secure justice for the students, ensure their dignity and safety, and protect women’s honor,” said Dr. Alka Gurjar.

The allegations against Akoijam surfaced when at least 11 students filed complaints of sexual harassment against him in May this year. He was a professor at the ‘Center for the Study of Social Systems’ under JNU’s School of Social Sciences. Following an internal committee’s investigation, which recommended severe punishment, JNU dismissed Akoijam from service on October 9. The order, signed by Vice-Chancellor Shantishree D. Pandit, stated that the decision was based on following due process, considering all available facts, and the internal committee’s report.

On October 11, the Delhi Police registered a named FIR against Akoijam at the Vasant Kunj North police station based on a complaint from JNU’s Chief Security Officer. The case is registered under sections 75 and its subsections 75(1)(i) and 75(1)(iv) of the Indian Penal Code, which pertain to sexual harassment and acts intended to insult a woman’s modesty. The police are currently investigating the matter.

Akoijam has denied the allegations, describing them as a “witch hunt.” He claims he has nothing to hide and has not received the investigation report or recommendations against him, asserting that the university did not follow the established procedures under the law. The registration of the FIR marks the beginning of the investigation, which is still ongoing.

Protests have also erupted in Rajasthan, led by the BJP’s women’s wing. On October 10, women workers marched towards the Congress headquarters in Jaipur, led by local MP Manju Sharma and state president Rakhi Rathore, but were stopped by police at Chomu Circle. The protesters burned effigies of the Congress MP and demanded action.
