Women MPs Demand Action Against JNU Professor Accused of Sexual Harassment

New Delhi, October 15: A delegation of women Members of Parliament (MPs) submitted a memorandum to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday, demanding action against Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, a dismissed professor from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), who faces allegations of sexual harassment.

Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Alka Gurjar from Rajasthan stated that the delegation met with the Lok Sabha Speaker to press their demands. Just a day earlier, the same delegation had submitted a memorandum to President Droupadi Murmu.

“The fight for women’s respect, safety, and justice will continue from the streets to Parliament,” Dr. Gurjar emphasized.

Second Memorandum in Two Days: Demand Reaches Parliament

On Wednesday, the women MPs raised this issue at the President’s residence, and on Thursday, they brought it to the Lok Sabha Speaker’s office. Dr. Gurjar affirmed their commitment to advocating for women’s dignity and rights at every level. Om Birla represents Kota in Rajasthan.

What is the Case About?

Akoijam, a Congress MP from Inner Manipur, was a professor at JNU’s School of Social Sciences. In May of this year, at least 11 female students filed complaints against him for sexual harassment. Following an internal committee’s investigation and recommendations, JNU dismissed him from service on October 9. Subsequently, on October 11, the Delhi Police registered a named FIR at the Vasant Kunj North police station based on a complaint from JNU’s Chief Security Officer.

Akoijam has denied the allegations, labeling them a “witch hunt.” He claims he has nothing to hide and that the university did not follow the proper procedures. The investigation is currently ongoing.
