Jaipur, June 7: Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has addressed the long-standing controversy surrounding the Congress presidency. He stated that if Sonia Gandhi had wanted him to become the national president of Congress, he could not have refused such a responsibility. Gehlot alleged that a conspiracy was orchestrated against him, leading to the perception that he was unwilling to leave his position as Chief Minister or take on the role of Congress president.
Speaking to reporters at the Constitution Club in Jaipur, Gehlot claimed he was misrepresented during that period. He emphasized that it was falsely portrayed that he preferred to remain Chief Minister and was not interested in national politics, which was far from the truth. According to him, circumstances were manipulated to create the impression that he was not keen on becoming the Congress president.
Gehlot expressed his readiness to accept the position of national president but noted that events unfolded in a way that damaged his reputation, embroiling him in unnecessary controversies. He described this as a significant conspiracy in his political career, stating that he failed to grasp the situation correctly at the time, resulting in his unwarranted defamation.
It is noteworthy that before the 2022 Congress presidential elections, party leadership considered Gehlot a leading candidate for the position. Senior Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Ajay Maken had visited Jaipur as observers during that time. Discussions were ongoing about Gehlot potentially stepping down as Chief Minister to take charge of the organization in Delhi. However, the situation changed, and he was eventually excluded from the race for the Congress presidency.
Gehlot’s recent statements are being linked to the events of that period, with political analysts suggesting that he aims to convey that he did not reject the opportunity to become Congress president; rather, he was unable to attain the position due to circumstances and political developments.
