New Delhi, October 28: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha by-election from Madhya Pradesh. The party’s central election committee approved his nomination on Wednesday, October 28. Tarun Chugh, in charge of the party’s national headquarters, issued a statement regarding the decision.

Puri is currently a Rajya Sabha member representing Uttar Pradesh, with his term set to expire on November 25, 2026. The seat from Madhya Pradesh, to which he has been nominated, will remain vacant until April 2, 2030. If he wins the by-election, he will serve an additional three and a half years in the Rajya Sabha.

Seat Vacated by Murugan’s Resignation

This seat became vacant following the resignation of Union Minister Dr. L. Murugan. He stepped down from both the Union Council of Ministers and the Rajya Sabha earlier this month, stating his intention to focus on strengthening the BJP organization in Tamil Nadu. Murugan was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh for the second time in April 2024.

Voting Scheduled for November 12

Nominations for the by-election can be submitted until November 2. The scrutiny of nominations will take place on November 3, and candidates can withdraw their nominations until November 5. If necessary, voting will occur on November 12 from 9 AM to 4 PM, with counting starting at 5 PM. Given the BJP’s clear majority in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, Puri’s election is widely considered assured.

Former diplomat Hardeep Singh Puri has previously served as India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations. He has been a Rajya Sabha member from Uttar Pradesh since 2018 and has held the Petroleum Ministry since July 2021.
