Jaipur, October 17: The Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee has announced a statewide protest in response to BJP state president Madan Rathore‘s controversial remarks regarding Pakistan. The party plans to burn effigies of Rathore at district headquarters across the state on October 17. Congress has urged all district committees, affiliated organizations, and party workers to participate in this demonstration, demanding an apology from Rathore. Rathore previously stated that his comments were made in the context of a cricket match and were taken out of context.
In a statement, the Congress party condemned Rathore’s remarks, calling them shameful. They emphasized that disrespect towards the nation’s brave soldiers and innocent citizens who have sacrificed their lives against terrorism will not be tolerated.
The controversy erupted during a program in Jaipur commemorating former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s birthday. According to reports, Rathore mentioned that if tensions arise between the U.S. and Pakistan, India would side with Pakistan as a neighboring country, but in the case of India-Pakistan tensions, India would be supported. This statement’s first part quickly circulated on social media.
Rathore later clarified that he was referring to a cricket match and not war, asserting that clips of his speech were edited to misrepresent his views. He reiterated that India shares a hostile relationship with Pakistan, making it impossible to support them.
This protest comes at a critical time, just five days before the first phase of the Panchayat Raj elections in the state, scheduled for October 22. The election process was announced on October 3, and the model code of conduct is currently in effect.
The Congress party’s call for action reflects the heightened political tensions in Rajasthan as the elections approach.
