Jaipur, April 4: Punit Karnawat, the BJP’s state coordinator for the local bodies cell and former deputy mayor, has written to Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, urging an extension of the penalty and interest waiver period for the Urban Development Tax. This request is seen as a significant step in favor of urban taxpayers.
In his letter, Karnawat emphasized that the Urban Development Tax is a primary revenue source for urban bodies, aiding in urban development, infrastructure expansion, and strengthening urban frameworks. He praised the state government’s initiative to provide a penalty and interest waiver until March 31, 2026, noting that it has not only offered relief to taxpayers but also positively impacted revenue collection.
Karnawat further pointed out that during March, salaried individuals, traders, and entrepreneurs face additional pressure from various taxes and financial obligations. Consequently, many taxpayers have been unable to pay the Urban Development Tax on time. Additionally, the lump-sum dues from 2007 to 2026 have posed challenges in making payments.
Considering these circumstances, Karnawat has requested the Chief Minister to extend the penalty and interest waiver period from March 31, 2026, to July 31, 2026. He believes that this decision would benefit a larger number of taxpayers and significantly enhance the revenue of local bodies.
He expressed confidence that the state government would make a positive decision on this public welfare proposal, providing relief to citizens and strengthening the trust between the government and the public.
