Light Snowfall in Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Other Higher Altitudes
Srinagar, January 29: Several high-altitude regions in Kashmir Valley witnessed fresh snowfall, while rainfall was recorded in some low-lying areas. Popular tourist destinations like Gulmarg and Pahalgam experienced light snowfall overnight, enhancing the winter landscape for visitors.
According to the Meteorological Department, northern Kashmir’s ski resort Gulmarg received 2.5 cm of fresh snow and 3.8 mm of rain, whereas Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded 2.7 cm of snow and 1.8 mm of rain. Meanwhile, Sonamarg and surrounding mountain passes in Ganderbal district are now completely snow-covered, making them a perfect winter retreat.
Snowfall was also reported in the upper reaches of Kupwara district, while its plains experienced rainfall.

End of Chillai Kalan Harshest Winter Phase Concludes Tonight
The 40-day-long harsh winter period, ‘Chillai Kalan’, will officially end tonight. This phase is typically known for extreme cold and continuous snowfall. However, this year, apart from two brief spells of snow, the weather has largely remained dry.

The Meteorological Department has issued a fresh weather advisory, predicting cloudy conditions, rainfall, and snowfall in the coming days:
Thursday (February 1):
Overcast skies with light to moderate snowfall & rainfall
Possibility of thunderstorms & scattered showers
Friday (February 2):
Partially cloudy weather with isolated light snowfall & rain
Dry conditions expected in some areas
Saturday (February 3):
A fresh, widespread spell of snowfall & rain across J&K
February 4:
Intensified rain & snowfall expected across Jammu & Kashmir
The weather is expected to remain disturbed until February 4, with moderate to heavy precipitation in various regions.
