IRCTC Update: Aadhaar Verification Mandatory for Tatkal Tickets Starting July 2025 — Here’s What You Need to Know

If you often rely on the Tatkal ticket booking facility of Indian Railways, an important update is coming your way. From July 1, 2025, IRCTC is set to implement new rules that will make Aadhaar verification mandatory for booking Tatkal tickets through its website and mobile app. In addition, starting July 15, 2025, an OTP-based verification step will also be required to complete Tatkal bookings.

This move is aimed at cracking down on ticketing agents and fraudulent practices, ensuring genuine passengers have better access to confirmed tickets.

Railway Minister Confirms New Booking Rules

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently confirmed this major change to the Tatkal system. He explained that in the first 30 minutes of the Tatkal booking window, only users whose IRCTC accounts are linked with Aadhaar and KYC-verified will be able to book tickets. The objective is to prevent brokers from cornering bulk tickets and promote transparency in the system.

This new framework is also a key feature of the soon-to-be-launched Indian Railways Super App, designed to streamline ticketing services for passengers.

How to Verify Aadhaar in Your IRCTC Account

If you haven’t completed Aadhaar verification on your IRCTC account, follow these simple steps:

  1. Visit the IRCTC website or open the IRCTC mobile app and log in.

  2. Navigate to ‘My Account’ and select ‘Authenticate User’.

  3. Enter your Aadhaar number or Virtual ID.

  4. Click ‘Verify Details’.

  5. You will receive an OTP on your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.

  6. Enter the OTP, tick the consent checkbox, and click ‘Submit’.

If successful, your IRCTC account will now be Aadhaar authenticated. If not, check your details and try again.

How to Link Aadhaar to Your IRCTC Profile

If your Aadhaar number is not yet linked to your IRCTC account, here’s how to do it:

  1. Log in to your IRCTC account via the website.

  2. Go to ‘Profile’ and select ‘Link Aadhaar’.

  3. Enter your name and Aadhaar number as per your Aadhaar card.

  4. Tick the consent checkbox and click ‘Send OTP’.

  5. Enter the OTP received on your registered mobile and click ‘Verify OTP’.

  6. Click ‘Update’ — a message will confirm that Aadhaar verification is successful and KYC details have been updated.

Things to Keep in Mind

A Big Step Toward Transparency and Fair Access

The new Aadhaar-linked verification process is a significant step toward making Tatkal ticket booking more secure and transparent. It will help curb fraudulent bookings by agents and improve the chances of genuine passengers securing confirmed tickets.

If you regularly book Tatkal tickets, be sure to complete your Aadhaar verification before July 2025 to avoid any disruption in your travel plans.
