Scheduled Closure Ahead of Monsoon Season to Ensure Flight Safety
Mumbai, April 19, 2025 — One of INDIA’s busiest aviation hubs, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai, will undergo a temporary shutdown on May 9, 2025. The airport will suspend flight operations for six hours, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, to carry out pre-monsoon maintenance on its two primary runways.

According to a statement released by Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), the planned maintenance is a routine annual procedure aimed at ensuring optimal runway conditions during the upcoming monsoon season. Both runways, 09/27 and 14/32, will be closed for this maintenance window.
Why Is the Runway Maintenance Needed?
Airport officials emphasized that the work is essential to prevent waterlogging and surface damage during the monsoons. A specialized engineering team will inspect the runways for signs of surface wear, structural weakness, and debris accumulation. Repairs will be conducted as needed to ensure safe landings and takeoffs, particularly under wet and stormy weather conditions.
“This proactive maintenance helps ensure that the runways are safe and operational despite heavy rainfall during the monsoon,” said a spokesperson from MIAL.
Advance Notice Issued to Airlines
To minimize disruptions, MIAL confirmed that a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) was issued six months in advance, alerting all airlines and airport stakeholders about the planned shutdown. This early notification allowed airlines to adjust their flight schedules, reschedule departures and arrivals, and inform passengers well in time.
Airport authorities stated that all ground services, terminal operations, and cargo handling would continue without interruption during the six-hour window, affecting only runway operations.
Minimal Passenger Impact Expected
While the temporary suspension is expected to impact domestic and international flights, airlines have already revised their schedules to avoid cancellations or severe delays. Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for updated flight timings and plan their airport arrivals accordingly.
The Mumbai airport, one of India’s top-ranking international gateways, handles over 950 flights daily and serves more than 50 million passengers annually. The two-runway system plays a critical role in maintaining the high volume of air traffic.
