Rahul Gandhi Leads 240 MPs in Request to Meet Election Commission Amidst Tensions

New Delhi, October 7: The Election Commission of India has issued a statement regarding a request from opposition MPs for a meeting and march. According to the Commission, no political party had requested a meeting through an official representative by 4 PM on Tuesday.

The press note indicated that around 4 PM, the Delhi Police informed the Commission that a delegation of MPs, led by Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, wished to meet and submit a memorandum.

As per the Commission’s press note, they were considering this request after 4 PM when the Delhi Police’s DCP reported that the meeting was to involve a group of 240 MPs, proposed to take place at the Parliament House ‘Annex’. The Commission deemed this request unusual, stating that such meetings typically occur within the Commission’s premises.

The Commission proposed sending its most senior official to the meeting location to receive the memorandum, describing this as an unprecedented step. However, the MPs did not accept this proposal.

The Commission’s press note further clarified that a procedure for meetings with political parties had been established for 2025, which had already been communicated to all parties. Under this procedure, any party or a joint delegation must request a meeting through their officially authorized representative, and a mutually agreed time is then set for the meeting.

The Commission emphasized its respect for the country’s parliamentary and democratic processes, as well as its protocols and traditions. Any political party can request a meeting at any time, and the Commission will determine a suitable date and time based on availability. The press note was issued by Deputy Director P. Pawan.

This press note represents the Commission’s stance. As of now, there has been no formal response from the opposition MPs. Recently, tensions have escalated between the Commission and the opposition over issues related to the SIR and voter lists. Just a day prior, the Commission released a fact-check in response to allegations made by Rahul Gandhi, while the Supreme Court has sought answers from the Commission regarding decisions related to the SIR.
