Jodhpur, April 7 A wave of intense heat has gripped Rajasthan, marking the beginning of a fierce summer spell, with temperatures soaring well above seasonal averages. After Barmer breached the 45°C mark on Sunday, the mercury in Jodhpur surged past 43°C on Monday, triggering extreme discomfort and forcing residents indoors during peak afternoon hours.

Roads Empty as Heatwave Intensifies
By midday, Jodhpur’s streets wore a deserted look, as searing hot winds swept through the city, making it nearly unbearable to venture outside. The oppressive heat created heatwave-like conditions, with residents reporting a palpable sense of Loo — the hot, dry summer winds notorious in North India.
The intense sunshine coupled with hot gusts left citizens reeling under the heat, especially in both urban and rural parts of the Marwar region.
Rising Temperatures Across Marwar
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the western disturbance that was previously moderating temperatures has now cleared, paving the way for severe heat to intensify across western Rajasthan.
-
Jodhpur: Over 43°C
-
Barmer: Peaked above 45°C on Sunday
-
Other parts of Marwar: Experiencing similar heatwave patterns
The IMD has issued a heat alert for the next 2–3 days, warning of a further rise in temperature and increased likelihood of heatstroke and related health issues, especially among vulnerable populations.
Heatwave Precautions Advised
Authorities are urging residents to:
-
Avoid stepping out during noon to 4 PM
-
Stay hydrated and wear light cotton clothing
-
Use umbrellas or head coverings when outside
-
Keep elderly and children indoors during peak heat hours
With the mercury showing no signs of dropping soon, Rajasthan’s summer has clearly arrived in full force, and the worst may still be ahead.
