Udaipur, March 13: Surgeons at Pacific Medical College and Hospital have successfully operated on an 18-year-old boy, removing a rare tumor from his spinal cord and preventing him from becoming disabled. This surgery was not only technically challenging but also sensitive due to the patient’s young age.
The patient, Nanalal from Salumber, had been experiencing increasing weakness in his left leg and difficulty walking for the past three months. After consulting with a local doctor without improvement, his family brought him to Pacific Hospital. Under the leadership of Dr. Subhash Sharma, head of the Orthopedics Department, Dr. Emanuel Bhore conducted an examination. An MRI revealed a tumor at the T6-T7 level of the thoracic spine, which was pressing on nerves and posed a risk of paralysis.
Dr. Emanuel Bhore emphasized that immediate surgery was essential. The complex spinal surgery, performed under the guidance of Dr. Subhash Sharma, involved a T6-T7 laminectomy procedure. This allowed the surgical team to access the inner parts of the spinal cord and successfully remove the tumor, which was not only pressing on the nerves but also extending into the foraminal area, requiring meticulous dissection. To ensure spinal stability post-surgery, the team utilized the T6-T8 pedicle screw fixation technique.
The successful operation involved a dedicated team, including spine surgeons Dr. Emanuel Bhore, Dr. Mohit, Dr. Ruchit Suthar, and Dr. Pulkit, along with anesthesiologists Dr. Prakash Audichya, Dr. Ravindra Singh, Dr. Arvind, and OT in-charge Subhash Sharma, Manna Lal, and Nagesh.
Dr. Bhore noted that the incidence of intradural extramedullary tumors is only 0.3 to 0.4 cases per 100,000 individuals annually. Typically, this condition occurs in individuals aged 40 to 60, making it highly unusual for someone as young as 18.
Following the operation, Nanalal has achieved complete neurological recovery. He can now walk independently and has experienced full relief from pain and weakness.
Rahul Agarwal, chairman of PMCH, stated that the successful operation is a testament to the integration of new medical technologies and the expertise of their doctors. He acknowledged the challenges of treating such a rare condition at a young age but praised the spine surgical team for their exceptional work. PMCH continues to set new benchmarks in handling complex cases, ensuring that patients in Mewar and surrounding areas receive top-notch care close to home.
