Patna, January 29 : The effects of an approaching Western Disturbance will soon be visible in Bihar, particularly in terai (low-lying) regions, leading to a change in weather patterns starting from February 1 or 2. The state is expected to experience partially cloudy skies, with cold northwesterly winds continuing to keep temperatures low during mornings and evenings.
According to the Meteorological Center in Patna, a yellow alert has been issued for dense fog in 11 districts, including East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Supaul, Madhubani, Saharsa, Madhepura, Araria, Purnia, Katihar, and Kishanganj. Other parts of the state, including Patna, will witness light fog in the morning hours.

Cold Winds Persist Despite Sunshine
Even though sunlight has been visible across most parts of Bihar during the daytime, the cold northwesterly winds (pachhua hawa) have maintained chilly conditions, particularly during early mornings and late evenings.
On Tuesday, minimum temperatures fell across 18 districts, reinforcing the lingering winter chill. Dehri recorded the lowest temperature at 6.2°C, while the maximum temperature stood at 12.0°C.
Minimum Temperatures Recorded Across Key Cities
Several districts, including Banka, Jamui, Aurangabad, Dehri, Pusa, Jeeradei, and Motihari, witnessed minimum temperatures dropping below 9°C, reinforcing the cold wave impact.
- Patna: Morning fog, but sunshine in the afternoon; cold winds persisted.
- Purnia: Dense fog conditions with reduced visibility.
- Northern and Terai regions: Thick fog, making travel difficult.
The fog intensity in these regions has disrupted normal life, particularly early morning transportation and rail schedules.
What to Expect in February?
1. Increase in Cloud Cover
As the Western Disturbance becomes active over North INDIA, Bihar will experience increased cloudiness in the first week of February.
2. Persistent Cold Mornings and Evenings
The impact of cold northwesterly winds will continue, keeping early mornings and late evenings chilly. However, afternoon temperatures may remain stable, providing some relief.
3. Potential for Light Drizzles in Some Areas
While significant rainfall is not expected, a few regions may experience light drizzle between February 1-2, particularly in northern Bihar.
4. Visibility Challenges Due to Fog
Thick fog will continue to affect visibility in the terai regions and some urban centers, impacting road and rail transportation.
Weather Advisory for Bihar Residents
- Morning commuters should exercise caution due to dense fog, particularly in the northern districts.
- Farmers should prepare for temperature fluctuations, as the upcoming Western Disturbance could bring moisture, affecting crops.
- Elderly and children are advised to stay warm, as cold winds will persist despite sunny days.
- Travelers should check train and flight schedules, as dense fog might cause delays.
Final Outlook: Cold to Persist, but Changes Ahead
While winter is gradually transitioning, the upcoming Western Disturbance will delay a complete shift to warmer conditions. The first week of February will bring cloudy skies, foggy mornings, and occasional drizzles, prolonging the winter chill in several parts of Bihar.
Residents are advised to stay updated on weather developments and take necessary precautions as the state prepares for its final phase of winter before spring sets in.
