UDAIPUR, March 9 (Daily Udaipur) — A surprising administrative situation has emerged in the education department in Udaipur district, where 109 government schools currently have two principals each, while 245 principal posts remain vacant.

The situation has raised questions about the functioning of the department, as several schools have more than one principal while many others are operating without a principal.
According to officials, the issue arose after principals and vice-principals were promoted to the post of principal on January 24, 2025, but their postings have not yet been finalised. As a result, in several schools, the newly promoted principals are working alongside the already serving principals in the same institution.
The education department stated that 689 principal posts are sanctioned in Udaipur district, out of which 444 principals are currently working, while 245 posts are still vacant.
If the situation is examined at the block level, the condition is particularly serious in Kotda block, where out of 44 sanctioned principal posts, only 8 are filled and 36 remain vacant.
At the state level as well, the situation remains concerning. In Rajasthan, 19,860 principal posts are sanctioned, but currently only around 12,415 principals are in service, leaving about 5,445 Posts Vacant across the state.
Sher Singh Chauhan, State President of the Rajasthan Panchayati Raj and Secondary Teachers’ Union, said that counselling and posting for vice-principals and principals should be completed before the new academic session so that it benefits students.
Administrative Confusion in Schools
The presence of two principals in a single school has reportedly created disputes over administrative authority. This has led to confusion among staff and factionalism within institutions, affecting the school environment and student discipline.
There are also internal discussions suggesting that postings are being delayed to place preferred candidates in schools located closer to the city. However, local officials have attributed the delay to decisions pending at the Directorate in Bikaner.
Schools with Two Principals
Two principals are currently working in 109 schools across the district, including Jagdish Chowk Senior Secondary School, Fateh School, Savina Kheda, Sukher, Dakan Kotda, Saru, Balicha, Kewda Khurd, Datisar (Kurabad block), Wali (Kurabad), Bachhar, Eklingpura, Naighasa, and Pipli, among others. In some institutions, as many as five vice-principals are also posted in the same school.
Directorate to Take Final Decision
District Education Officer (Secondary) Dr. Lokesh Bharti said promotions have already been given, but postings will be decided only after counselling at the Directorate level in Bikaner.
Meanwhile, 245 schools in the district currently do not have principals, including institutions such as Government Senior Secondary School Khakhariya (Kotda), Umariya Kotda, Junapadar (Kotda), Khojawada (Rishabhdev), Dhelana (Rishabhdev), Bichhiwada (Rishabhdev), Gudli (Kurabad), Bambora (Kurabad), Somkheda (Kurabad), Obera Kala (Gogunda), Dadiya (Gogunda), Morwal (Gogunda), Akola (Bhinder), Amaliya (Bhinder), and Amarpura Jagir (Bhinder).
