Hyderabad, March 2: Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi participated in a joint meeting of the Political Affairs Committees (PAC) of Congress in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh on Monday.
Gandhi arrived in Telangana for a one-day visit and attended the PAC meeting at the SAP Arts and Science College in Vikarabad. He was accompanied by K.C. Venugopal upon landing at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, where he was welcomed by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.
Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee President Mahesh Kumar Goud, and Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee President Y.S. Sharmila also greeted Gandhi in Vikarabad.
After the PAC meeting, Rahul Gandhi visited the Haritha Resort in Ananthagiri Hills, where he participated in a training camp for newly appointed district Congress committee presidents from both states. These leaders have completed a 10-day training program aimed at strengthening the party at the grassroots level.
During this visit, discussions may take place regarding significant party matters, including the upcoming elections for two Rajya Sabha seats from Telangana. The state Congress leadership is expected to present a list of names for Rajya Sabha nominations.
Several senior leaders are vying for tickets, including Shyam Mohan Anantula, Chief Minister’s advisor Vem Narender Reddy, former Rajya Sabha member V. Hanumantha Rao, Telangana State Planning Board Chairman G. Chinna Reddy, former MP Madhu Yashki Goud, and M. Kodanda Reddy, Chairman of the Telangana Agricultural and Farmers Welfare Commission.
The deadline for filing nominations is March 5, with elections scheduled for March 16. The Rajya Sabha terms of Abhishek Manu Singhvi and K.R. Suresh Reddy will end on April 9.
Congress holds 66 seats in the 119-member Assembly, and with the support of allies CPI (1 seat) and AIMIM (7 seats), they are confident about winning both seats. Reports suggest that Congress leadership aims to send Abhishek Manu Singhvi back to the Rajya Sabha.
