Guwahati, March 3: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has alleged that the Congress party has tailored its electoral strategy around assembly seats dominated by ‘Bangladeshi-origin Muslims’ ahead of the upcoming state elections.
Speaking to reporters, Sarma claimed that most of the seats Congress is contesting under its alliance are those with a significant population of Bangladeshi-origin Muslims. He emphasized that this approach reflects the party’s political priorities, which diverge from the interests of Assam’s indigenous communities.
“The people of Assam should closely monitor the seats where Congress is contesting under its alliance. Most of these seats have a substantial Muslim population of Bangladeshi origin. Congress is clearly not standing with the indigenous people of the state,” he stated.
As the assembly elections draw near, Sarma noted that this pattern is becoming increasingly evident.
He also referenced a perceived political rivalry between Congress and the regional party Raijor Dal, led by activist-turned-politician Akhil Gogoi. Sarma alleged that this competition is similarly confined to such seats, reinforcing his claims about Congress’s electoral focus.
“I have always said that Congress is not connected with Assam or its indigenous people. If the competition were in seats like Jorhat or Dibrugarh, the message would be different. Instead, Congress has mortgaged its political soul to the Bangladeshi-origin Muslim voters and is running its politics from those areas,” he added.
These remarks come amid escalating political rhetoric in the state as parties ramp up their preparations for the assembly elections.
