Kolkata, March 4: The first semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2026 is set to take place today, with New Zealand facing South Africa at Eden Gardens. Ahead of the match, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner noted that while the pitch appears favorable for batting, the role of spin bowlers will remain crucial.
New Zealand’s team arrived directly from Sri Lanka. Santner expressed that an extra day of rest would have been beneficial, but the players have had a solid practice session and are fully prepared for the match. He acknowledged the differing conditions between Colombo and Kolkata, emphasizing that all teams have played enough cricket at this level to adapt quickly.
Santner also pointed out that many of his players have experience playing in India, including in the IPL and bilateral series, which gives them an edge in understanding local conditions. However, he stressed that experience alone is not sufficient; adapting to the conditions on match day is vital.
Reaching the semifinals indicates that the opposing team is strong. South Africa has performed exceptionally well in the tournament, making the upcoming match highly competitive. Discussing the pitch, Santner mentioned that the previous match showed a flat wicket, which is advantageous for batsmen. Nonetheless, spin bowlers will still have a significant role, and fast bowlers must maintain the correct line and length. The dimensions of the field will also play a crucial role in strategy.
Regarding the match scheduled on Holi, Santner remarked that the festive atmosphere in India is unique, and his team aims to perform well and add color to this celebration. Overall, New Zealand is brimming with confidence and fully prepared to secure a victory against South Africa in the semifinal.
