Hindustan Zinc Launches All-Women Tejaswini Shift to Empower Women in Mining

Udaipur, March 13: Hindustan Zinc Limited, a leading integrated zinc producer and one of the top five silver producers globally, has taken a significant step in India’s metals and mining industry by launching the ‘Tejaswini’ all-women shift at the Chanderiya Smelting Complex. This facility is one of the largest and most technologically advanced zinc smelting operations in the world. This initiative is crucial for creating an inclusive workforce and providing leadership opportunities for women in key operational roles within heavy industries.

At the Chanderiya Smelting Complex, female engineers and operators will play a central role in metallurgical operations, significantly contributing to zinc production for infrastructure, manufacturing, and energy transition applications. Through the Tejaswini initiative, Hindustan Zinc is empowering women to lead essential processes in the most advanced smelting ecosystem in the global metal industry.

Historically, women’s participation in the mining and metals sector has been limited. Hindustan Zinc is redefining industry norms by taking significant steps to ensure women represent essential operational roles. Currently, women make up 26.3% of the workforce, the highest in this sector, setting new benchmarks for gender diversity in a traditionally male-dominated industry.

A dedicated team of 30 female professionals will oversee core process operations, maintenance, and safety tasks in these units, marking a substantial advancement in women’s participation in core manufacturing roles. This initiative has led to the establishment of fully women-led operational shifts in leaching and purification processes at the Chanderiya Smelting Complex. This is a vital part of the company’s hydrometallurgy operations, directly impacting zinc production throughput and product quality. Tanya Singh, the plant manager for L&P One, is leading this initiative, guiding the team to strengthen operational excellence while maintaining Hindustan Zinc‘s safety-first culture.

In recent years, the company has expanded opportunities for women in mining and metal operations, from underground mining and smelting to digital control rooms and leadership roles. These efforts align with Vedanta Group’s goal of achieving 35% female participation in its workforce, with Hindustan Zinc playing a pivotal role in advancing this vision in the sector.

Arun Mishra, CEO and Whole-Time Director of Hindustan Zinc, stated, “We believe that the future of mining will be driven by diverse talent, advanced technology, and a culture of inclusivity. The launch of Tejaswini reflects our commitment to providing excellent opportunities for women in core operational roles that power industrial performance. By enabling women to lead essential processes in our smelting operations, we are strengthening our talent pipeline while pushing the boundaries of leadership and capability beyond traditional industry limits. As we meet our long-term growth objectives, such initiatives will help create a more progressive and future-ready mining sector.”

As India rapidly advances its goals in infrastructure, clean energy, and industrial growth, Hindustan Zinc continues to demonstrate how inclusive workplaces can foster operational excellence and innovation. Through initiatives like Tejaswini and ongoing investments in people-centric policies, the company is setting new benchmarks for the metals and mining industry. Hindustan Zinc has also established India’s first underground all-women mine rescue team, supported female engineers in night shifts, and led tele-remote mining operations and smelting control rooms. The integration of the V-Safe app, CCTV surveillance, biometric access systems, female security personnel, and night transportation facilities has strengthened workplace infrastructure, ensuring that employees can work with confidence, safety, and leadership while preparing a more diverse and future-ready workforce.
