Strengthening Child Protection Laws: Workshop on Child Marriage, Juvenile Justice, and POCSO Act

Udaipur, March 18: A one-day capacity-building workshop was organized by Child Fund India in collaboration with the District Legal Services Authority, District Child Protection Unit, Rajasthan State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, and the district administration. The workshop provided detailed information on the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, the Juvenile Justice Act, and the POCSO Act.

Participants included members from the Child Welfare Committee, Childline helpline, District Child Protection Unit, Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, Women’s Police Station, Juvenile Home, Girls’ Home, and personnel from the education department, along with grassroots workers in child protection.

Coordinator Rajesh Sharma stated that the workshop aimed to strengthen the campaign for a child marriage-free India and to provide clear information on relevant laws to grassroots workers and officials, ensuring effective action against child marriage.

Special Judge Mahendra Kumar Dave, Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority Kuldeep Sharma, Child Protection Expert Dr. Shailendra Pandya, Child Rights Commission member Dhruv Kaviya, Deputy Director of the Department of Child Rights K.K. Chandravanshi, Deputy Director of the Department of Women’s Empowerment Sanjay Joshi, and Deputy Director of Child Fund India Rama Rao shared insights on various provisions of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, the Juvenile Justice Act, and the POCSO Act.

Experts emphasized that preparation or attempts at child marriage are also legally considered crimes. Understanding the law and raising awareness in society are essential for protecting the best interests of children. The workshop also discussed the role of the administration, legal processes, and enhancing the child protection framework.

Approximately 50 participants from various departments attended the workshop.
