Jaipur, March 31: Rajasthan’s Leader of the Opposition, Tikaram Julie, has leveled serious accusations against the BJP government. He claims that by delaying the Panchayat elections, the government is jeopardizing rural development. Julie pointed out that the Supreme Court has issued clear directives to conduct the elections by April 15. However, as the deadline approaches, there appears to be no solid preparations from the government.
Julie warned that if the Panchayat elections are not held on time, there is a risk of losing approximately ₹1,900 crores in funding from the central finance commission. This would adversely affect crucial initiatives like the Swachh Bharat Mission, Jal Jeevan Mission, and MGNREGA, directly impacting rural communities. He described this situation as a “blow to an already fragile financial condition” of the state.
He questioned Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma and Finance Minister Diya Kumari, asking if the BJP government is halting development projects out of fear of elections. He raised concerns about how the state government would compensate for the loss of this funding and whether it would lead to increased debt for the state.
Julie also emphasized that Rajasthan, the birthplace of the Panchayati Raj system, is witnessing a weakening of democratic institutions. He recalled that former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru initiated the Panchayati Raj system from Nagaur on October 2, 1959.
In conclusion, he urged the state government to expedite the Panchayat election process, adhere to the court’s directives, and ensure that rural development funds and programs are not adversely affected.
