Ashok Gehlot Critiques PM Modi on Womens Reservation Bill, Questions BJPs Commitment to Women Leadership

Jaipur, April 17: The political discourse surrounding the Women’s Reservation Bill has intensified. Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot sharply responded to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent speech in the Lok Sabha, raising questions about the BJP’s policies. Gehlot pointed out that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has never appointed a woman as its national president, while the Congress party has consistently provided women with opportunities in leadership roles.

Gehlot took to social media platform X, asserting that Congress has been the strongest advocate for women’s reservation, a vision it has upheld for decades. He emphasized that over the past 25-30 years, countless women have been given leadership opportunities in grassroots politics due to Congress policies, crediting Rajiv Gandhi’s Panchayati Raj system and the initiative to reserve seats in local bodies.

Highlighting Congress’s contributions, he noted that the country has seen its first female President, Pratibha Patil, its first female Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, and its first female Lok Sabha Speaker, Meira Kumar, all as a result of Congress’s vision. In stark contrast, he pointed out that the BJP has yet to appoint a woman to its highest leadership position.

Gehlot also remarked that the Prime Minister should have acknowledged Rajiv Gandhi and the UPA government’s efforts in his speech, which could have fostered a more positive atmosphere in Parliament. He accused Modi of attempting to convey that Congress and other opposition parties oppose women’s reservation, despite the reality that all parties support this cause.

Additionally, Gehlot questioned whether the Prime Minister had discussed this crucial issue with Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi. He linked the topic of delimitation to women’s reservation, suggesting that there is an attempt to implement delimitation under the guise of women’s reservation. He stressed the need for extensive discussions with all states and stakeholders, particularly in South India. Following Gehlot’s statements, political debates around women’s reservation and delimitation are expected to intensify, keeping these issues at the forefront of parliamentary and state politics in the future.
