Heated Debate in Lok Sabha Over Womens Reservation Bill

Mumbai, April 17: The political debate surrounding the proposal to grant 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha has intensified. Discussions continued for a second day on three amended bills related to delimitation, leading to sharp exchanges between the ruling party and the opposition. Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee criticized the government, questioning the need for delimitation if 50% reservation is to be implemented, suggesting that there is no need for “drama” as all parties agree on this matter.

In a significant move, the central government has issued a notification to implement the ‘Women’s Reservation Act-2023.’ This law mandates 33% reservation for women in Parliament, effective from April 16, 2026. The act was previously passed during a special session of Parliament in September 2023.

However, despite the law’s implementation, the actual impact remains unclear. According to current provisions, this reservation will only come into effect after the delimitation based on the 2026-27 census, meaning its effects will not be seen until after 2034. The government is striving to implement women’s reservation in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, necessitating the passage of the three amendment bills currently under discussion. Voting on these bills is expected to take place at 4 PM today.

The opposition has raised questions about the government’s haste in implementing the law while detailed discussions are ongoing in Parliament. However, the government asserts that determining the law’s effective date falls within its jurisdiction, as clarified in the notification. This entire episode has brought critical issues like women’s reservation and delimitation to the forefront of national politics. The outcome of these bills could significantly influence the landscape of women’s political participation in the future.
