Mumbai, April 18: The political debate surrounding the Women’s Reservation Bill has intensified in the Lok Sabha. Discussions on three revised bills related to delimitation continued for a second day, marked by sharp exchanges between the ruling party and the opposition. Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee criticized the government, questioning the need for delimitation if 50% reservation is to be granted, asserting that there is no need for “drama” as all parties agree on this matter.
In a significant move, the central government has issued a notification to implement the ‘Women’s Reservation Act-2023’. This law mandates a 33% reservation for women in Parliament, set to take effect from April 16, 2026. The act was previously passed during a special session of Parliament in September 2023.
However, the actual impact of this law remains unclear despite its implementation. According to current provisions, the reservation will only be applicable based on the delimitation following the 2026-27 census, meaning its effects will not be seen until after 2034. The government is striving to implement women’s reservation in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, contingent upon the passage of the three amendment bills currently under discussion. Voting on these bills is expected to take place at 4 PM today.
The opposition has raised questions regarding the haste with which the government has implemented the law while discussions are ongoing in Parliament. The government, however, maintains that determining the effective date of the law falls within its jurisdiction, as clarified in the notification. This entire development has brought critical issues like women’s reservation and delimitation to the forefront of national politics. The outcome of these bills could significantly impact women’s political participation in the future.
