Bengaluru, May 28: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah resigned from his position on Thursday. During a press conference held in Bengaluru, he stated that he had previously made it clear he would step down whenever the party high command requested. Siddaramaiah mentioned that he received the directive to resign on Wednesday and submitted his resignation today.
He confirmed that he handed his resignation to the secretary of Governor Thawarchand Gehlot, who is currently reported to be out of Bengaluru due to family reasons. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar was also present at the press conference.
Although the Congress leadership did not formally announce the name of the next Chief Minister during the press briefing, political circles widely consider DK Shivakumar as the likely successor. Prior to this, Siddaramaiah held a meeting with ministers at his residence to inform them of his decision.
The meeting featured emotional moments, particularly when DK Shivakumar touched Siddaramaiah’s feet, and both leaders embraced each other. This gesture is seen as a sign of unity during the leadership transition within the Congress party.
Meanwhile, state government minister H.K. Patil indicated that consensus has been reached on DK Shivakumar’s name, suggesting he will be the next Chief Minister of Karnataka. However, the party high command’s formal announcement is still awaited.
Political analysts believe that the Congress party is making this change with an eye on the upcoming assembly elections and organizational balance. Following Siddaramaiah’s resignation, all eyes are now on the Congress leadership’s next move.
