Mumbai, June 16: Mohan Bhagwat, the Chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), responded to questions regarding the organization’s registration during the centenary celebrations held in Thrissur, Kerala. He stated that there are many organizations in the country that are not registered. Bhagwat emphasized that the RSS has nothing to hide and operates with complete transparency.
When questioned about the Karnataka government’s comments suggesting that the RSS’s activities are secretive and that registration is necessary, Bhagwat clarified that the RSS is not a secret organization and does not need to answer to anyone. He noted that RSS branches meet in open fields, public events are organized, and people can directly observe the activities of volunteers in their neighborhoods.
Bhagwat further explained that organizations receiving financial assistance or grants from the government are required to register, and this is appropriate. He assured that the government is fully aware of the RSS’s existence and its activities, which are conducted openly within society.
In response to Bhagwat’s statements, Karnataka’s Home Minister Priyank Kharge remarked that no institution can be above the law and accountability in a democratic system. He alleged that the RSS receives donations from both domestic and foreign sources and that its officials are provided government security. Therefore, the organization should adhere to legal processes and accountability.
Kharge also clarified that Bhagwat’s remarks were being presented on social media as a response to his letter, which is factually incorrect. According to him, he wrote to the RSS on June 15 regarding the organization’s registration and financial transparency, while Bhagwat’s comments were made prior to that date.
It is noteworthy that on the occasion of the RSS’s centenary, Kharge had written to Bhagwat requesting public disclosure of the organization’s legal status, registration, financial sources, income-expenditure, and assets. He questioned why the RSS should be exempt from registration and legal regulations when non-governmental organizations, trusts, labor organizations, religious institutions, and companies are required to comply.
