Jaipur, July 27: The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has officially decided to contest the upcoming Panchayati Raj and urban local body elections in Rajasthan with full strength. The party may field its official candidates along with supported candidates as needed. However, the final list of seats and candidates has not yet been announced.
In a recent meeting, AIMIM’s Rajasthan state president, Jameel Ahmed Khan, discussed the political landscape and preparations for the local elections with national president Asaduddin Owaisi. Owaisi approved the proposal to robustly contest the urban local body elections. The state leadership has also begun preparations to enter the Panchayati Raj elections with organizational strength.
Following the meeting with Owaisi, a virtual gathering of state officials and party workers was held under Jameel Khan’s chairmanship. The meeting focused on strengthening the organization at the district and local levels, reaching out to potential candidates, and identifying key areas for contesting elections.
The party has stated that it will prioritize local issues, civic amenities, social justice, constitutional rights, and political representation in its election campaign. A comprehensive outreach campaign is set to launch soon at the state level.
In 2022, AIMIM expanded its state unit in Rajasthan and contested the 2023 assembly elections in the Hawa Mahal, Fatehpur, and Kaman constituencies. The decision to participate in local body and Panchayat elections is viewed as part of its new strategy to expand its grassroots organization in the state.
Traditionally, local elections in Rajasthan have been dominated by the BJP and Congress. AIMIM’s active participation could lead to new electoral dynamics, especially in urban local bodies and Panchayat areas with significant Muslim and minority voter presence.
However, the party’s actual impact will depend on candidate selection, local organization, alliances, and strategies regarding supported candidates and regional issues. This is seen as a potential breach into Congress’s traditional voter base, but any conclusions before the election results are merely political assessments.
The state government has informed the Rajasthan High Court that the process for pending Panchayat and urban local body elections will be completed by November 15, 2026. Consequently, various political parties have accelerated their organizational and candidate selection preparations.
