Ashok Gehlot Demands Resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Amid Political Controversy

Jaipur, September 27: Political tensions have escalated following objections raised within the Election Commission regarding its decisions. Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has targeted Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, demanding his resignation. Gehlot accused the BJP of defending Kumar and claimed that its leaders are acting as “self-proclaimed spokespersons” for the Election Commission.

This controversy intensified after reports emerged indicating that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had repeatedly filed written objections over the Commission’s decisions in the past ten months. However, the Election Commission later clarified that all major policy decisions, including the nationwide Special Intensive Revision (SIR), were made with the Commission’s consensus.

Gehlot noted that in the past, when issues arose within constitutional bodies, all political parties would unite to seek solutions. He pointed out that for the first time, two Election Commissioners are questioning the integrity of the Election Commission itself, which is supported by NDA allies.

Gehlot stated on social media that previously, political parties would speak in unison when problems concerning constitutional institutions arose. He emphasized that the current situation is unprecedented, with objections coming from within the Commission itself. Some NDA allies have sought clarifications from the Election Commission, asserting that a clear explanation would bolster public trust in the electoral process.

Gehlot further alleged that BJP leaders are acting as spokespersons for the Chief Election Commissioner. He claimed that the questions raised about Kumar have not received satisfactory answers, which he believes undermines the credibility of the Election Commission.

He also referenced Rahul Gandhi‘s allegations of “vote theft” and related accusations against the Election Commission, suggesting that recent revelations lend credence to Gandhi’s concerns. Gandhi has also called for the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar amid this controversy.

Gehlot insisted that there is collusion between the BJP and the Chief Election Commissioner, urging Kumar to resign. This political accusation from the Congress leader has not been substantiated by any judicial or electoral authority.

In response, the Election Commission issued a clarification stating that decisions related to SIR and changes in voter registration forms were made unanimously at the Commission level. They also addressed several questions regarding internal disagreements.

On the other hand, the BJP has dismissed the allegations from Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party. They asserted that the Election Commission’s clarification confirms that key decisions related to SIR were agreed upon by its members.

BJP leaders accused Congress of spreading confusion regarding the Election Commission, while Congress maintains that many questions remain unanswered despite the Commission’s clarification.

At the center of this dispute are decisions related to the Special Intensive Revision of the voter list, the process of adding and removing voters’ names, and the decision-making process within the Election Commission. Political rhetoric continues between Congress, other opposition parties, and the BJP.
