Congress Protests Alleged Vote Theft in Jaipur, Clashes with Police Erupt

Jaipur, September 28: The Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee staged a protest against alleged vote theft and issues related to voter lists outside the Election Commission office in Jaipur. Following a rally at the Shaheed Smarak, Congress leaders and workers marched towards the Chief Electoral Officer’s office. Police set up barricades to halt the march, leading to clashes between the protesters and law enforcement, after which water cannons were deployed.

After the demonstration, several leaders, including former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, state Congress president Govind Singh Dotasra, opposition leader Tika Ram Jully, and state in-charge Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, were taken into custody and transported to the Vidyadhar Nagar police station.

March Towards Election Commission Office Blocked

After gathering at the Shaheed Smarak, Congress workers began their march toward the Election Commission office. Police had set up multiple layers of barricades along the route. When the protesters reached the barricades, a scuffle ensued between the two sides.

To control the situation, police used water cannons. Amid the heavy spray, Congress leaders and workers continued to chant slogans. Eventually, police removed senior leaders from the protest site.

Gehlot Calls It a Fight to Save Democracy

Addressing the protest, Ashok Gehlot accused the central government of undermining democratic institutions. He urged Congress workers to engage with the public against these attempts.

Gehlot cited the delimitation process in Assam as an example of political manipulation. He described the fight for democracy as a “do or die” situation for the workers.

Dotasra Accuses Chief Election Commissioner

Govind Singh Dotasra raised concerns about Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Special Intensive Review (SIR) of voter lists. He alleged irregularities in the voter list process and stated that Congress would take these issues to the public across the state.

Dotasra indicated that Monday’s protest marks the beginning of this campaign, with party workers set to reach out to villages regarding the alleged irregularities in the electoral process.

Election Commission Responds

Congress and other opposition parties have raised questions regarding the SIR and alleged discrepancies within the Election Commission. However, sources linked to the commission stated that while both election commissioners raised questions and comments during discussions on the SIR, no formal dissent was recorded against the final decisions. According to the commission, all three members signed the relevant final orders.

The allegations of “vote theft” and collusion made by Congress remain political claims that have not been independently verified.

Future Protests Planned

Congress has indicated that its campaign regarding the Election Commission and voter list issues will continue. State leadership has stated that workers will engage with the public on these matters, demanding greater transparency in the electoral process.
