New Delhi, October 2: The Punjab Congress has a new state president. Former Indian hockey captain and Jalandhar Cantt MLA, Pargat Singh, has been appointed as the president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. The Indian Youth Congress announced this on social media late Friday evening, congratulating Singh and extending best wishes to the outgoing president, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, for his tenure.
This leadership change coincided with Raja Warring formally submitting his resignation to Rahul Gandhi. With assembly elections scheduled in Punjab next year, the party is ramping up its organizational preparations.
“Congratulations to Senior Congress Leader Shri Pargat Singh ji on being appointed Punjab PCC President. Our best wishes to Shri Amarinder Singh Raja Warring ji after a wonderful tenure and his dedicated service to the organization,” the Indian Youth Congress tweeted.
From Hockey Field to Assembly
Pargat Singh is a well-known name in the sports world, having captained the Indian hockey team. After entering politics, he was initially part of the Shiromani Akali Dal before joining Congress ahead of the 2017 Punjab assembly elections. He currently serves as the MLA from Jalandhar Cantt.
Singh has previously held significant roles within the Congress organization, including being appointed as the General Secretary (Organization) of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee in 2021. He has now been entrusted with the leadership of the state party.
Connection to Rajasthan
This appointment in Punjab has a direct link to Rajasthan. The Congress has appointed former Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot as the All India Congress Committee in charge of Punjab. Thus, new state president Pargat Singh will need to collaborate with Pilot to strengthen the party’s organization in Punjab.
Interestingly, both major parties in Punjab are led by leaders from Rajasthan. The BJP has appointed former Rajasthan state president and Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Satish Punia as its in-charge of Punjab, with Dr. Alka Gurjar serving as co-in-charge. The strategy for the 2027 Punjab assembly elections will be in the hands of these leaders.
