Jaipur, October 6: BJP state president Madan Rathore has targeted the Congress party regarding the voter list and Special Investigation Report (SIR). He raised concerns over Sonia Gandhi’s entry in the old voter list. In response to a journalist’s question, he stated that it is natural to question how someone can be registered as a voter before becoming a citizen of the country.
“Sonia Gandhi became a citizen of this country later; how did she become a voter first? If this is not vote theft, then what is it? She was registered as a voter before becoming a citizen, which is wrong. This is what we call vote theft. The purification happening in the SIR is addressing this issue,” said Rathore.
The controversy stems from an old complaint alleging that Sonia Gandhi’s name was added to the voter list for the New Delhi area in 1980, while she received Indian citizenship in April 1983. According to the complaint, her name was removed from the list in 1982 and re-added in 1983.
A magistrate’s court dismissed the request to file an FIR regarding this complaint on September 11. Subsequently, a sessions court in Delhi overturned that order, sending the case back to the magistrate’s court for reconsideration.
Key points to understand:
– The sessions court did not determine the validity of the allegations; it raised procedural objections.
– The court noted that the magistrate’s order was issued without explanation, the relevant police officer was not heard, and a status report from the police station was not obtained.
– The case has been returned for a fresh hearing.
– No FIR has been filed yet, and the allegations remain unproven.
– Final conclusions on the facts will be determined through investigation and judicial process.
Thus, Rathore’s statement pertains to a case that is still in its early stages in court. Reports of the sessions court’s order have been published in legal publications.
In the ongoing debate, Rathore described the SIR as a process for the ‘purification’ of the voter list. The Election Commission states that its goal is to ensure the inclusion of eligible voters, the accuracy of the list, and transparency in the process.
Conversely, Congress and other opposition parties have raised questions about several aspects of the SIR, labeling it as ‘vote theft.’ Both sides are using the same term against each other. On Monday, the Supreme Court denied an immediate suspension of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar while seeking a response from the commission, which countered Rahul Gandhi’s allegations by releasing a fact-check.
Rathore had previously criticized Congress over the ‘vote theft’ allegations, asserting that the BJP respects the public mandate.
