Santo Domingo, April 11 A devastating roof collapse at the Jet Set Nightclub in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, has claimed the lives of 221 people, marking one of the deadliest structural disasters in the Caribbean nation’s recent history. The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday morning during a live performance by popular singer Ruby Perez, who was also among the deceased.

Rescue Efforts End After 53 Hours
Director of the country’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC), Juan Manuel Mendez, confirmed the death toll during a press briefing on Thursday morning, visibly emotional as he declared the conclusion of the search and rescue efforts.
“Today marks the hardest day in my 20 years at EOC. After 53 hours of non-stop operations, we have cleared the entire site. We managed to save 189 lives,” said Mendez, choking up during the announcement.
Ongoing Forensic Work and Identification
According to NBC News, the Dominican Republic, a Caribbean nation on the North American continent, is now focusing on forensic procedures. The Office of the Attorney General released an official list of confirmed victims and stated that forensic doctors and pathologists are continuing their work to identify the remaining bodies and conduct autopsies.
Authorities are yet to determine the exact cause of the collapse, but investigations are ongoing. Structural engineers and law enforcement agencies are expected to release a preliminary report in the coming days.
