Tonk, April 20: Congress leader and MLA Sachin Pilot launched a sharp critique against the central government, the BJP, and the political landscape in various states during a media interaction in Tonk. He questioned the Election Commission’s decision to announce the Kerala assembly elections prematurely, despite the term lasting until May. This haste, he argued, deprived the opposition of adequate time to prepare. Nonetheless, he expressed confidence that Congress and the UDF would contest the elections robustly and secure a clear majority.
Commenting on the political situation in Assam, Pilot described it as alarming. He accused those in responsible positions of using abusive language and attempting political polarization. He noted that while BJP leaders are allowed to make accusations, they react sharply when questioned. He also highlighted that incidents of police action during the enforcement of the code of conduct raise concerns about the democratic process.
Pilot further criticized the BJP for failing to take concrete action against illegal immigration despite being in power for the last ten years in Assam and twelve years at the center. He alleged that the party is trying to win elections through fear and polarization, which he deemed detrimental to democracy. Regarding the elections in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, he stated that Congress would contest all 294 seats in Bengal, presenting a significant opportunity for the party to showcase its strength. He mentioned that Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and Mallikarjun Kharge would campaign there.
Addressing the situation in Rajasthan, Pilot emphasized the issues faced by farmers. He condemned Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma’s statement suggesting that farmers only work a few days a year. Pilot asserted that farmers toil year-round and are the backbone of the nation, urging the government to take substantial steps to honor and assist them. He also called for immediate financial aid for farmers affected by hailstorms and excessive rainfall.
He accused the state government of stagnation in development projects, stating that there is no construction or progress in villages. Programs like MGNREGA are also being impacted. Additionally, he criticized the government for not conducting local body elections, arguing that halting constitutional processes is wrong and that the government fears public backlash. He questioned the lack of coordination between the government and organizations, stating that the administrative apparatus has become dominant. He concluded by asserting that if anyone has committed wrongdoing, they should be punished, but actions must be fair and based on facts.
