Enhanced Security for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar Amid Protests

New Delhi, October 9: Additional security personnel have been deployed for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has assigned extra reserve forces to his existing Z-plus security detail. According to officials, this deployment occurred on October 7.

Officials clarified that this does not indicate a change in security classification. Z-plus is already the second-highest level of security, with only SPG protection, granted to the Prime Minister and their family, above it. The additional personnel have been assigned based on an assessment of current threats and circumstances.

Reports suggest that a multi-layered security cordon has been established outside the Election Commission building, involving the Rapid Action Force (RAF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and Delhi Police. Furthermore, security has reportedly been increased at his ancestral home in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. However, these details have not been confirmed by news agencies or official sources, which only mention the additional reserve deployment by CISF.

This security enhancement comes at a time when the opposition is demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over allegations of “vote theft” and the special intensive revision of voter lists. On October 6 and 7, MPs from the India Block staged protests in Delhi, resulting in the detention of several lawmakers.

The Congress party declared October 8 as “Black Day,” organizing nationwide protests. The Supreme Court has declined to suspend Gyanesh Kumar immediately, instead seeking responses from the Election Commission regarding decisions related to the special intensive revision.

Protests have also occurred in Rajasthan, with numerous district Congress committees demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation on September 29. Effigies were burned in Dholpur and Didwana, and state president Govind Singh Dotasra submitted a memorandum to the state election commissioner.

Gyanesh Kumar took office as the 26th Chief Election Commissioner of India on February 19, 2025. There has been no formal statement from the Election Commission or the Ministry of Home Affairs regarding the increased security measures.
