Jaipur, August 22: Former Chief Minister of Rajasthan and senior Congress leader Ashok Gahlot has launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the central government’s ethanol blending policy in petrol and the rising prices of sugar. Gahlot accused the central government of making shortsighted decisions that are financially burdening the common people.
In a statement released on his official social media account, Gahlot noted that a significant portion of sugarcane is now being diverted towards ethanol production instead of sugar manufacturing. He claimed this shift has impacted the availability of sugar in the open market, leading to a surge in prices.
Gahlot Claims Sugar Prices Increased by ₹14 to ₹17 per Kilogram
The former Chief Minister asserted that sugar prices have risen by ₹14 to ₹17 per kilogram in just 15 days. He emphasized that this issue directly affects the kitchens and household budgets of ordinary families.
Gahlot pointed out that if a large portion of sugarcane is directed towards ethanol production, it is natural for sugar production to face pressure. He questioned the central government on why adequate assessments of sugar availability in the market and the potential impact on consumers were not conducted before implementing such policies.
Concerns for Vehicle Owners
Gahlot did not limit his objections to sugar price hikes; he also raised concerns about the impact of ethanol blending on vehicle owners. He alleged that the government’s policy is affecting food prices while also imposing economic burdens on vehicle owners.
The central government has long promoted ethanol blending as a strategy to reduce dependence on crude oil imports, encourage alternative fuels, and create additional markets for farmers. However, Gahlot’s accusations may intensify political debate on this issue.
Increased Political Activity in Rajasthan
Gahlot’s statement comes at a time when the opposition is continuously targeting the central government over rising inflation and increased expenses for the average consumer. He has linked the issues of sugar prices and the ethanol policy, framing them as a direct concern for the common man’s finances.
