Big relief is on the way for the people of Maharashtra as the state government has announced a major cut in electricity prices. In a landmark decision aimed at easing the financial burden of households and small businesses, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed that electricity tariffs will be reduced by 26% over the next five years.

Phase-Wise Tariff Reduction Announced
The price cut will be implemented in phases, beginning with a 10% reduction in the first year. The move follows the approval of the Maharashtra State Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC), which accepted a petition from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (Mahavitaran) to reduce rates—a rare move, considering that power distribution companies typically request hikes.
Chief Minister Fadnavis highlighted the decision on social media, calling it “historic.” “For the first time in the state’s history, electricity prices are being reduced so significantly. This will bring tangible financial relief to common citizens,” he stated.
Who Will Benefit?
The electricity rate cut will apply to all three major consumer categories:
-
Domestic users
-
Commercial users
-
Industrial consumers
However, the biggest beneficiaries will be domestic consumers, especially those in the middle and lower-income brackets. About 70% of electricity consumers in Maharashtra use less than 100 units per month. These families will feel the immediate impact of the reduced bills, helping them save significantly over time.
Boost to Farmers and Solar Energy
The announcement comes alongside the rapid expansion of the Mukhyamantri Saur Krishi Vahini Yojana 2.0, a scheme launched in 2017. Under this initiative, decentralized solar power plants (2 MW to 10 MW capacity) are being developed near agricultural sub-stations to supply daytime electricity to farmers, reducing their dependence on erratic power supply and fossil fuels.
The scheme not only empowers farmers with reliable energy but also supports Maharashtra’s shift towards renewable energy, aligning with national sustainability goals.
A Consumer-Centric Approach
This decision marks a major shift in utility policy—one that favors affordability, transparency, and inclusivity. As the rates come down gradually, consumers across all sectors are expected to benefit in the form of reduced operational costs and enhanced savings.
The Chief Minister’s Office reiterated that this move reflects the government’s commitment to improving the lives of ordinary citizens, particularly in times of rising inflation and economic pressure.
