
Kolkata, February 27: Tremors were felt in Kolkata and several areas of West Bengal following a 5.3 magnitude earthquake in Bangladesh on Friday. The quake struck at approximately 1:22 PM, causing widespread alarm across the city.
According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers in Bangladesh. As a result, strong tremors were experienced in Kolkata and surrounding districts.
Initial reports indicate that the shaking lasted for several seconds, leading to panic among residents. Many people evacuated offices and buildings as a precaution. The earthquake’s intensity in Kolkata was measured at 5.0, with its epicenter located about 8 kilometers from the city.
A notable incident occurred during a public meeting where Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar was speaking. He also felt the tremors and was seen inquiring about the situation afterward. Cameras at the event shook due to the earthquake.
The districts most affected by the tremors included South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, East Midnapore, and West Midnapore.
A young woman from Howrah reported experiencing strong shaking for a few seconds. “We later learned that it was an earthquake,” she said, expressing the fear it instilled in everyone.
Previously, on February 3, a significant area of Kolkata experienced tremors after another earthquake, which lasted about 15 seconds. Initially, it was reported that the source of that quake was Myanmar.
