New Delhi, June 23: Central Minister of State George Kurien has resigned from the Union Council of Ministers. According to information released by the President’s office on Tuesday, President Droupadi Murmu accepted his resignation on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The official reason for the resignation has not been disclosed.
The 65-year-old Kurien served as the Minister of State for Minority Affairs and Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying in the third term of the Modi government. He was a Rajya Sabha MP from Madhya Pradesh since August 2024.
Reports indicate that his term as a Rajya Sabha member ended on June 21. The BJP did not nominate him again for the Rajya Sabha, leading to speculation that his resignation from the Union Council of Ministers is linked to the conclusion of his parliamentary term.
Kurien is regarded as a senior leader of the Kerala BJP. He has been associated with the organization for a long time and is recognized as the Christian face of the BJP in South India. He was entrusted with the role of Central Minister of State during the third term of the Modi government.
Political circles suggest that the BJP did not re-nominate him after the party’s underwhelming performance in the recent Kerala Assembly elections. However, no official reason has been provided by either the BJP or the President’s office regarding this matter.
Following Kurien’s resignation, political discussions have begun regarding his replacement in the Union Council of Ministers. It is believed that the party may prepare new political equations considering representation from South India and minority communities in the future.
Kurien’s resignation comes at a time when the BJP is strategizing anew regarding political performance and representation at both organizational and governmental levels. The party has been striving to strengthen its base in states like Kerala for a long time.
With the acceptance of his resignation by the President, George Kurien is no longer part of the Union Council of Ministers. While the official reason for his resignation remains unclear, the end of his Rajya Sabha term and the lack of re-nomination are considered significant factors in this political development.
