Bhopal, June 9: A significant political development unfolded in Madhya Pradesh during the election for the third Rajya Sabha seat. Congress candidate Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination was rejected by the returning officer on Tuesday. This decision came after objections raised by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP alleged that Natarajan failed to disclose pending legal matters in a Hyderabad court in her nomination papers, casting doubt on the validity of her candidacy.
During the scrutiny of nomination papers, Natarajan was issued a show-cause notice by the observer, seeking clarification. After reviewing her response, the returning officer decided to annul her nomination. This ruling has significantly altered the political landscape for the Rajya Sabha elections.
The Congress party has condemned this action as politically motivated. Opposition leader in the Assembly, Umang Singhar, stated that there are no criminal charges against Natarajan, only a notice from the court. He claimed that the decision to reject her nomination is factually and legally incorrect, and the Congress will challenge this ruling in court.
Political tensions were palpable during the nomination verification process within the Assembly premises. Heated debates, slogans, and chaos erupted between Congress and BJP leaders. Congress legislators Hemant Katare and Vikrant Bhuria attempted to enter the returning officer’s chamber but were stopped by police and Assembly security personnel.
Meanwhile, the Congress was preparing to send its legislators to Bengaluru under protective measures. A special chartered flight had arrived in Bhopal for this purpose, but a dispute arose when the Airport Authority initially denied permission for takeoff. Senior Congress leader Sajjan Singh Verma alleged that the flight was being obstructed under pressure from the state government. After nearly two hours of negotiations, the chartered flight was granted permission and took off for Bengaluru around 6:30 PM.
It was reported that the aircraft was carrying 75 people, including 38 legislators. However, shortly after takeoff, news of Natarajan’s nomination rejection reached them, forcing the plane to return. This incident has sparked intense discussions in political circles regarding the Congress party’s future strategy.
This development is seen as a significant setback for the Congress in the Madhya Pradesh Rajya Sabha elections. All eyes are now on the legal steps the Congress will take and the potential impact on the upcoming election process.
