National Conference Legislators Demand Cabinet Reshuffle in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar, November 2: In a significant political move, 25 legislators from the ruling National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir have issued a 14-day ultimatum to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. They are demanding the removal of advisor Nasir Sogami and the four ministers appointed during the cabinet expansion on October 27. If their demands are not met, the legislators have threatened to withdraw their support for Abdullah’s government. They are also calling for a major reshuffle within the cabinet.
The legislators have accused Sogami of misleading party leadership and interfering in the organization’s operations. The ultimatum, starting from November 1, will expire on November 15.
Delegation Led by Nazir Ahmad Gurezi and Muzaffar Iqbal Khan
During a meeting, the legislators decided to form a four-member delegation. This group will be led by senior party leader and Gurezi MLA Nazir Ahmad Gurezi, along with Thanamandi MLA Muzaffar Iqbal Khan. The delegation plans to submit a memorandum of demands to party president Farooq Abdullah and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. They will await a response from the leadership before determining their next steps.
Srinagar MP Ruhullah Mehdi Announces Resignation
Meanwhile, Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, the National Conference MP from Srinagar, has also announced his resignation. He stated that he will formally resign from both the party and his Lok Sabha membership on November 3.
Ruhullah has accused the party leadership of undermining his ideological commitments. He expressed concerns that the party is backing away from its promise to challenge the central government’s decision on Article 370.
Cabinet Expansion Leaves Senior Legislators Out
In the cabinet expansion on October 27, four National Conference legislators—Ali Mohammad Sagar, Mir Saifullah, Shamima Firdous, and Altaf Ahmad Kaloo—were appointed as ministers. Independent MLA Satish Sharma was removed from the cabinet.
Several senior legislators, whose names were discussed for ministerial positions, were left out, including Nazir Ahmad Gurezi and Mubarak Gul. Gurezi is now leading the delegation of disgruntled legislators. Later, Farooq Abdullah appointed Mubarak Gul as the party’s general secretary, replacing Ali Mohammad Sagar.
