New Delhi, March 9: The Lok Sabha proceedings have been adjourned until 11 AM on March 10 following a ruckus created by opposition members. They accused the central government of maintaining a ‘silence’ regarding the escalating tensions in West Asia. Opposition MPs staged protests within the Parliament premises.
The opposition has demanded immediate action to ensure the safe return of Indians stranded in the affected countries. They also urged the government to clarify its plans to address the potential energy crisis arising from the instability in West Asia.
Earlier in the day, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the Rajya Sabha, outlining the government’s stance on the situation. He discussed the safety of Indian citizens residing in Gulf countries and the implications for India’s energy security. However, opposition MPs expressed dissatisfaction with the minister’s statements.
Among the leaders participating in the protests were Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, party president Mallikarjun Kharge, and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav.
BJP MP Anurag Thakur stated that in light of current global conditions, the measures taken by India for its citizens, both domestically and abroad, were detailed by the External Affairs Minister. He criticized the opposition for lacking direction, highlighting their pending motions against the Speaker and their inability to engage in constructive debate.
Union Minister Giriraj Singh remarked that such behavior in the House was unexpected, especially under the leadership of the opposition. He emphasized that obstructing the House’s functioning undermines the rights of the public.
BJP MP Sambit Patra noted that the entire nation is watching the proceedings through television and social media, witnessing how the opposition, particularly the Congress party, is disrupting the decorum of the House. He accused the Congress of attempting to surround the House with a ‘mafia raj’ within the party.
Akhilesh Yadav, the Samajwadi Party chief, insisted that the government must clearly articulate its position on the ongoing conflict and its implications. He pointed out that many Indians, including tourists, are stranded, and questioned how they would return safely.
